Zimbabwe offers US$100 advance to civil servants

The government has offered an advance payment of US$100 to each civil servant by Friday this week to cushion them until they receive their staggered salaries as announced last week.

The government last week announced the postponement of civil servants’ salaries, with the Zimbabwe National Army having been paid today, while the police and members of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPSC) will get their pay on 29 June.

The government also announced that the rest of the civil servants will be paid on 14 July, while pensioners will get their money on 19 July.
Speaking to the ZBC News after a national joint negotiating committee meeting in Harare today, civil servants’ umbrella body, Apex Council Chairperson, Ms Cecilia Alexander said the government offer will be communicated to workers and the government will be informed of the decision later in the afternoon tomorrow.

Ms Alexander also said workers will be incapacitated to report to work from the 30th of this month to the 6th of next month hence the need for government to take care of its workers during that period.

Last week, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Cde Prisca Mupfumira conceded that the government is facing revenue challenges but is committed to pay its workers.
