Religious leaders have met Acting President Phelekezela Mphoko and agreed on the observance of week-long national prayers for rains starting from the 9th to the 17th of this month.
Religious leaders from different denominations paid a courtesy call on Mphoko at his Munhumutapa offices in the capital.
The meeting saw the spiritual leaders and government emphasising the need for divine solutions to the problem of drought currently bedevilling the country.
“In face of this possible drought, it is important that the country turns to the Almighty God, the Creator and Sustainer of life to heal the nation,” said  Mphoko.
Zimbabweans have since been called upon to dedicate time in different gatherings to pray for the rains from Saturday January 9 to Sunday January 17, 2016.
The Acting President said it is incumbent on all citizens of Zimbabwe to prioritise the national call and play their role
Prior to the meeting with the Acting President, the religious leaders met with the Minister of Rural Development, Preservation and Promotion of National Culture and Heritage, Â Abednico Ncube.
The cabinet minister highlighted that as a Christian nation, Zimbabwe should stand by God’s word and seek his intervention in the face of drought.
“I have no doubt that our prayers will unlock the heavens to shower our motherland and give us a good harvest,” he said.
Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ) President, Dr Shingi Munyeza, said there is need to put aside religious differences and plead with the creator for the rains.
A suggestion was put forward during the meeting for the National Day of Prayer to become an annual event which has a date on the national calendar.ZBC
