Zimbabwean woman saved from UK deportation after pilot refused to fly her

A Zimbabwean woman who was about to be deported from the UK breathed a huge sigh of relief when the pilot refused to have her on board.

Norah Mbire had been brought to Heathrow Airport with her two guards ready to be forcibly returned to Zimbabwe.

But Kenya Airways refused to transport her saying there was not enough room. Campaigners were furious because Norah had been handcuffed for five hours before being taken to the airport.

“It is midday and escort officers have handcuffed Norah Mbire from Zimbabwe and are violently restraining her. Her flight is scheduled for 5pm. 5 whole hours in handcuffs. She is no criminal and has cooperated with the Home Office and is NOT being disruptive. Stop treating us like animals. Remove Norah’s Handcuffs and Release Norah Mbire.”

Norah has since been returned to a detention centre where the Home Office will try again to deport her.
