Former Zimbabwe’s Industry Minister, Dr Nkosana Moyo believes that the recent protests that have rocked Zimbabwe were a result that the government is not willing to listen to the people.
Moyo says it’s not a sign that people in that country do not recognise the current government as a legitimate government.
The activists complained about the ailing economy, lack of jobs and late payment of civil servants’ salaries amongst others
Speaking on the Forum@8, Moyo says he resigned from his ministerial post because he felt that his contributions were not considered because he was not a Zanu-PF member.
It’s always advisable for the ruling party to listen to other parties as that will help improve relations between government and its citizens, he said.
A social media campaign named “ThisFlag” and “ZimShutDown2016” saw Zimbabwean citizens stay home in June, in protest against President Robert Mugabe and the ruling Zanu-PF.
The activists complained about the ailing economy, lack of jobs and late payment of civil servants’ salaries amongst others.
Following the protests, pastor Evan Mawarire, leader of the #ThisFlag protest movement was briefly detained by Zimbabwean authorities on charges of inciting violence which was later altered to the serious one of “subverting a constitutional government”.
But Zimbabweans rallied around him, even showing up at the courthouse to peacefully protest his arrest. -SABC
