Benyu in Zimbabwe Squad

Midfielder Kundai Benyu has been named in the Zimbabwe squad for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia next month, his first international call-up.

The Zimbabweans host the Liberians in their opening match on Sunday 11th June and will also face Congo and DR Congo in their group as they look to qualify for the 2019 tournament in Cameroon.

Benyu was born in Camden, his family having moved from Zimbabwe.

The 19-year-old has been offered new terms by the Blues after a successful loan spell at Aldershot with other clubs reportedly eyeing him.

According to Sky Sports, Benyu has rejected that contract, although further discussions appear likely. Town have an option to keep the academy product for another year, although there are conditions relating to it which have been the subject of talks between the club and his representatives.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are also reported to be keen on another young Town midfielder, Tristan Nydam, according to reports in Zimbabwe.

The 17-year-old was born in Harare before moving to Colchester as a child. Nydam is visiting Zimbabwe at present and reportedly hasn’t ruled out playing for the nation of his birth in the future having won his first England U18s cap this season.

He has also been named on standby for the England U20s ahead of the Toulon Tournament along with Ben Morris, while Andre Dozzell has been selected for the squad.
