Trio in court for assaulting friend over beer

THREE brothers were hauled before the courts last week on allegations of assaulting their friend following a misunderstanding during a beer binge. Esau (36), Maxwell (34) and Kenny Sadzimu (29) appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, facing charges of contravening Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9;23.It was the State’s case led by Mr Fletcher Karombe that the trio assaulted Clever Mvududu following a misunderstanding over beer.

“On April 9 at a beer garden in Chitakatira, Esau took a cup of beer belonging to Mvududu without his permission. This led to a brawl resulting in Esau’s brothers joining in. They heavily assaulted the complainant.

“Mvududu managed to free himself and run away from the scene, but the second accused, Maxwell, picked up a stone and stoned Mvududu on his head. He fell down. Realising that they had injured the complaint, the trio vanished from the scene. The complainant sustained a cut on his head, a swollen eye and cheek as well as a painful tooth,” said Mr Karombe.

When asked why they had acted in that manner, the trio asked for forgiveness. They were remanded in custody to April 20 for sentencing.

“You are not allowed to move around assaulting people and you should not take the law into your own hands because you risk going to jail. Desist from that bad behaviour,” said Mrs Chiundura.
