Will Smith died of “multiple gunshot wounds”, New Orleans city coroner Jeffrey C Rouse said.
The 34 year old is a former player for the New Orleans Saints. The incident happened following a car crash.
His wife Racquel, who was in the car with him, was also shot but is expected to make a recovery.
Smith was involved in an accident with another car. Police said the driver of that vehicle then shot Smith and has now been taken into custody.
“We are devastated and saddened by Will’s tragic and preventable death due to a senseless act that will leave a lasting scar on our community forever,” the team said in an official statement on their website.
“Will was more than an exceptional football player he was a father, a husband, a son, a brother and teammate to so many and an inspiration to countless more.”
He and his wife have three children – Wynter, William and Lisa.
