MDC-T Seeks Court Intervention to Block By-Elections

Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has filed an urgent Constitutional Court application seeking to stop the sitting of nomination courts for two by-elections scheduled for March.Spokesperson for the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC, Obert Gutu said Friday that the decision to file the court application was reached following a meeting of the party’s national executive.

The party wants the Constitutional Court to bar nomination courts from sitting to consider nomination of parliamentary candidates for the vacant Mount Darwin West and Chirumanzi-Zibagwe constituencies, arguing the process was flawed.

The MDC is arguing that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) had failed to conduct voter registration for new voters and did not have control of the voters’ roll.

The two seats fell vacant following the elevation of Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa and former Vice-President Joice Mujuru to the presidium.APA
